What does UCITS stand for?

Undertakings for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities — an EU framework setting strict diversification, transparency, liquidity and investor-protection rules for funds. A UCITS ETF is an ETF built under those rules.

Why are UCITS ETFs domiciled in Ireland?

Ireland has a tax treaty with the US that cuts withholding tax on US dividends entering the fund from 30% to 15%, making Irish-domiciled funds more tax-efficient for non-US investors. Luxembourg is the other common domicile.

Are UCITS ETFs good for non-US investors?

For most non-US investors, yes — they reduce US dividend withholding tax, avoid US estate-tax exposure, and are actually purchasable through EU/UK brokers, unlike US-listed ETFs.

Can US citizens or US residents buy UCITS ETFs?

Generally no. UCITS funds are usually treated as PFICs under US tax law, which is punitive for US persons. UCITS ETFs are intended for non-US investors.

What's the difference between accumulating and distributing UCITS ETFs?

Do UCITS ETFs pay dividends?

Distributing share classes do — monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually. Accumulating share classes reinvest dividends instead of paying them out.

What is the UCITS equivalent of VOO / SPY / QQQ?

Why won't my broker let me buy US ETFs?
